A recent survey conducted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) found that almost 63% of Canadian organizations reported raising more money in 2002 than in 2001, compared to only 49% of US organizations. Canadians also remained optimistic for 2003, with 68% predicting increased giving. However, only 45% or American organizations felt the same way. Why do you think the results are so different between our two countries? Is it just the slower American economy or something else?

The Canadian Government can be credited for some of this by providing free top-notch fundraising books through Heritage Canada in the past.

This is in response to your survey results that found Canadians were more giving towards non-profit organizations. I believe these results indicate that the vast majority of Canadians believe in the fine work done by non-profit organizations in this country. I also believe we need to continue to emphasize the importance of social programs and the massive underfunding faced by both governments and non-profit groups in both Canada and the United States today. Perhaps, if the United States government were to place more emphasis on saving starving children in third world countries through foreign aid programs instead of funding an illegal and immoral war against innocent civilians in Iraq, the tragic events of September 11, 2001 would never have occurred.
